Zhongsheng Hou (Fellow, IEEE) received the bachelor’s and master’s degrees in applied mathematics from the Jilin University of Technology, Changchun, China, in 1983 and 1988, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in automatic control from Northeastern University, Shenyang, China, in 1994. He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow with the Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, from 1995 to 1997, and a Visiting Scholar with Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA, from 2002 to 2003. In 1997, he joined the Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing, China, where he was a Distinguished Professor and the Founding Director of the Advanced Control Systems Laboratory and the Head of the Department of Automatic Control until 2018.

He is currently a Chair Professor with Qingdao University, Qingdao, China. Dr. Hou is a fellow of CAA and an IFAC Technical Committee Member on both adaptive and learning systems and transportation systems. He is also the Founding Director of the Technical Committee on Data Driven Control, Learning and Optimization (DDCLO), Chinese Association of Automation.

Dr. Hou proposed "model-free adaptive control", "data-driven control", "dynamic linearization technology", "pseudo-partial derivative", "pseudo-gradient", "pseudo-Jacobian matrix" and other new concepts which has been widely recognized. The model -free adaptive control (MFAC) theory is established and perfected. His research interests include data-driven control, model-free adaptive control, learning control, and intelligent transportation systems.
